TMCnet's Business Process Outsourcing Week in Review

By Michelle Amodio, TMCnet Contributor

It’s a short week here in tech news, as many of us prepare to eat and imbibe in celebration of Thanksgiving. Of course the week isn’t complete without a recap of the latest headlines, so here’s what happened in business process outsourcing this week.

Jamaica isn’t just a tropical destination. In fact, the Caribbean island is getting noticed by the global BPO sector, as the formation of the Business Process Industry Association of Jamaica (BPIAJ) came together to create a business environment conducive for the ICT growth.

Headquartered in the city of Montego Bay, the association was launched on November 9 by Phillip Paulwell, the Minister of Science, Technology, Energy and Mining.

“By organizing yourselves, you have not only enhanced Jamaica’s reputation in the world, you are bringing even greater definition and structural integrity, to ensure that we build a BPO industry that will be a global benchmark,” said Minister of Industry, Anthony Hylton.

In other BPO news, healthcare BPO is expected to generate $1 billion by 2016 as per Healthcare Information Management Outsourcing Association of the Philippines (HIMOAP).

According to the report, the industry is expected to see $433 million in revenue with 43,000 full-time employees as compared to revenue of $277 million in 2011. By 2016, there are 100,000 full-time employees expected.

“We are very fortunate to have the DOST-ICTO’s support because its programs are aligned with the implementation of ICT industry development project,” said HIMOAP president, Juanloz Botor.

Last but not least, a special TMCnet report discusses outsourcing in telecom and how it has been a rather integral step in helping telecom and wireless providers see growth in revenue.

Highlighted in the report is BPO company, Alorica, who helps businesses remain competitive and current in the telecommunications landscape. Clients include telecommunication service providers, fixed-line voice service providers, broadband Internet service providers and wireless telecommunications carriers.

“We have a strong bench in all lines of the telecommunication business that ensures healthy growth with a shortened learning curve,” said Kristina Chavis, vice president operations, Alorica. “We have a solutions team where their role is to provide solutions to the clients without them having to make major investments.”
