SAS 2012 Revenue Hit Record $2.87B, Good Prospects for 2013

By Colleen Lynch, TMCnet Contributor

SAS (News - Alert) announced on Friday that it has reached record heights with its global revenue for 2012, with earnings reported at US$2.87 billion.

As a successful business analytics leader, SAS expected a profitable year, but this record pull proved once again the company goes above and beyond for is customers, helping them make precise, proactive, breakthrough decisions across a vast range of businesses and industries.

SAS CEO Jim Goodnight commented on the company’s earnings for 2012, and its positive outlook for 2013; “In 2012, many companies began to rethink conventional ways of doing business when they realized big data analytics could deliver results almost instantaneously.”

“When high-performance analytics can solve the world’s toughest business problems thousands of times faster,” he said, “there’s no limit to what organizations can achieve.”

As for what SAS achieved in 2012, the list is fairly extensive. SAS Visual Analytics was praised in July, August and earlier this month, as a new way to explore large amounts of data in an instant.

SAS was also recognized for its workplace culture by Great Place to Work, which gave SAS the top spot on its World’s Best Multinational Workplaces list. SAS Belgium and SAS Sweden were also awarded first place on their respective country’s ‘Best Companies to Work For’ lists.

Research and development were focuses for the company in 2012, as SAS reinvested 25 percent of its revenue for the year into both pursuits.

SAS also increased its total workforce by a whopping 7 percent this year, with a total of 13,442 employees worldwide at the year’s end.

“The link is solid between SAS’ financial performance and treating employees and customers well. When people feel trusted, the results are phenomenal,” explained Goodnight. “It’s reflected in our commitment to innovation. It’s deeply gratifying that we’ve created a great place to work, not just in the United States, but also worldwide.”

The company is faring particularly well in the Americas, as well as the Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA) region. The Americas made up 47 percent of SAS’ total, worldwide revenue for 2012, while the EMEA region counted for 41 percent.

The Asia Pacific region helped pull in 12 percent of SAS’ total earnings for 2012.

SAS’ senior vice president and CMO Jim Davis added what he believes contributed most to this record year.

“Our value proposition has never been higher,” said Davis. “Dramatic reductions in processing times have bolstered new offerings such as visual analytics and high-performance applications for business. We’re also designing and distributing these innovations on iPads and Android (News - Alert) devices.”

Worldwide, SAS’ OnDemand solution revenue jumped up 15 percent from the previous year, and various changes in the company such as new partnerships and acquisitions have added to SAS’ success.

For instance, SAS spent much of 2012 working with Bank of America’s Corporate Investment Group, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina, eBay’s (News - Alert) Dutch branch, HP and Tmobile, helping each company maximize their returns, revenue and customer satisfaction.

In a notable acquisition this year, SAS absorbed the cloud-based ad server-technology aiMatch, to boost SAS’ analytics contribution to the digital advertising industry.

SAS also partnered with a slew of companies in 2012, including Accenture (News - Alert), Capgemini, Deloitte, EMC Greenplum, IBM and Teradata.

Despite all the success SAS has seen from 2012, the company is not resting, and is gearing up for another banner year in 2013.

SAS Visual Analytics will continue to be a focus for the company, while delivering business insight to big data companies with its SAS High-Performance Analytics Server.

With industry-specific solutions and a strong focus, SAS will surely match, if not outmatch its performance from 2012 in the year 2013.
